The Strategic Matrix
Having a great Strategic planning event is just the first step. Next, you are left with ideas, maybe some basic goals, action steps and deadlines if it was done right. Too many times, even a well setup strategic plan falters and dies just a few months later, as daily duties and other issues arise.

The STRATEGIC MATRIX is a tool to keep your Strategic Plan on track, all year long. An AE gave me a copy of this at an AE Institute a few years ago, she had obtained it from someone else...I typed it back up into Excel, now it can be yours. |
Each year I take the Strategic Planning event results, put all the goals into the four basic categories outlined and add in each goal's information into this spreadsheet. Some information I have to improvise on, but then I have leadership review it and make adjustments. This is an Excel file, it is designed to print on legal paper in landscape mode. I print it on the front and back of just one page (just feed it back through your printer to do this). Keeping it on just one page is very important, otherwise its just a bulky thing. Don't get too detailed on the goals, remember this is just a tracking tool, all the information is already in your Strategic Planning Results (or plan). NOTE: There is header & footer information in this file you will need to edit as well - the title, date stamp and color key! |
Each month before the board meets, I update this file (takes just a few minutes) and hand it out at EVERY board meeting with a brief verbal update. It has become an integral part of each board meeting! |
